HISTORY In 2006, “Lex” Berame was invited by Mr. Ayanz Gelves to join an invitational fun climb at Mt. Manghilao, Danao City Cebu. Two old college friends were trying to catch up with each other sharing the same ideas about safeguarding the gift of Mother Nature and the local communities. Then it came up to a discussion about the preservation of the environment and ruling out the participation of each individual in conserving the ecosystem. Ecotourism Study Tour It was then that Mr. Berame puts forward the role of eco tourism being an essential tool in environmental preservation thru social awareness by educating the local communities and sharing the experience to tourists with a very low impact on the environment. In the latter, the idea was conceptualized and gave birth to Zzubu Eco-Tourism Society (ZETS). It was first headed by Mr. Tyler “Lex” Berame as President and Founder and Mr. Bayani “Ayanz” Gelves, Co-founder and Vice President. ZETS found that eco tourism is an extensive tool to preserve biodiversity for local communities and organization to involve in a participatory way to derive maximum benefits in a sustainable way. ZETS believe that eco tourism, in general can improve the quality of the environment, cultural values, local community prosperity and quality of human relations.

Chasing his interest to study more on Eco Tourism, Mr. Berame decided to go beyond the shore of Cebu and went to travel to the different areas. He traveled not only within the islands of the Philippines, but he also went abroad. He persevered with his studies in the US. It was during his 2nd American Backpacking Adventure where he visited the National Parks like: Sedona National Park of Arizona, Rocky Mountains National Park of Colorado, Avalon of Catalina Island, Shoshone Falls and Bruneau Dunes State Park of Idaho as his main destination. To complete his American Backpacking Adventure, he went to the city of Las Vegas, and San Diego, California, Denver, Colorado and etc. His main objective is to discover and be able to understand the governing rules and policy of America on the topic of preserving and conserving the protected areas of the National Parks. In such a way, it will be beneficial to our country as we campaign for the protection of our National Parks as well. In addition, he traveled to enjoy and experience breath-taking adventures of his life. Antonio Pegafetta - The Chronicler of Ferdinand Magellan Statue at Fort San Pedro Cebu City

OUR NAME The word “Zzubu” came from the local name “Sugbu”, one of the original names of Cebu Island. Discovered by Ferdinand Magellan way back in 1521, the island of Cebu is enriched with cultural and historical facts and is now a fast growing tourist destination for leisure, pilgrimage, agricultural tours, urban trips, and adventure. ZETS has a multi-array of activities from highlands to wetlands. The name “Zzubu Eco-Tourism Society” was adapted by the group suitably inspired by its cultural significance. We focus on “Eco-Tourism” giving emphasis responsible travel and ecological conservation while creating a network of people that sustains the same purpose.

THE LOGO The first logo was created in 2007. It depicts the following animals: the Visayan Tarictic Horn Bill, the Visayan Spotted Deer and the Bottlenose Dolphin. At the background is the map of the Philippines. These animals are mainly found in the Visayan Region. They serve as one of the many aspirations why the Visayan Region has become the top destination in the entire Philippines. The logo was used during the first Eco Tourism Summit at Olango Island Philippines. The current logo displays a sketch of the Visayan Spotted Deer. This endangered specie that can now only be found in the neighboring islands of Cebu, like in Negros and Panay. This animal was once an inhabitant of Cebu; but because of the massive hunting they all perished. The Visayan Spotted Deer is known to be swift, and that is one of their best attributes. It can climb steep mountains, cross mighty rivers and swim in deep water. This embodies the key quality of the group: Diversity. The background shows the gifts of Mother Nature. The logo explains the importance of preserving the environment. It was substantiated during the extinction of the Visayan Spotted Deer in Cebu. The logo also serves as a public awareness not to kill or destroy the gifts of Mother Nature.

Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) Registered By the end quarter of 2007, Zzubu Eco Tourism was duly proclaimed as a registered member of the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) with Joy Gelves and Judith Querubin as part of the incorporators together with Mr. Brian Rivera as a sole witness. Zzubu Eco Tourism Society marks the date December 12, 2008 as a special event for it was when the Eco Tourism Programs sets off. Zzubu Eco-Tourism Society, Inc. is a non profit organization registered by Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) Cebu City. ZETS Security and Exchange Commission have a total of 13 Incorporators. The incorporators are all legal age and majority of who are resident of the Philippines and voluntarily agreed to form a non - stock and non - profit association under the laws of the Republic of the Philippines. Ecotourism is a significant tool in sustainable development as it also advocates protection of our natural resources, the base from which the ecotourism industry thrives. Ecotourism seeks to put in place mechanisms that are environmentally-sustainable, economically-viable, and socially-equitable in order to bring about development in the country that would redound to the benefit of local communities, especially the poor and marginalized sectors of society. The SEC Registration would have not been possible without the hard work and dedication of Ms. In-In Alviola, a friend of Mr. Bayani “Ayanz” Gelves who spent her time and knowledge to achieve tremendous contribution in establishing Zzubu Eco Tourism Society.
